Riding in the Rain: Tips, Gear, and Safety

Motorcycle Riding in the Rain: How to Reach Your Destination Safely

The ride has been planned for ages, but suddenly dark clouds roll in and rain starts falling. Many motorcyclists feel uncertain when the roads get wet, and for good reason. Rain can seriously change road conditions, reduce visibility, and increase the risk of hazards. But with the right preparation, gear, and riding technique, you can still enjoy a safe and relaxed ride in the rain. Here are the most important tips.

Why Rain Is Risky for Riders

Rain increases braking distance, reduces grip, and makes it harder to see. On top of that, road markings, tar snakes, and manhole covers get extremely slippery. That’s why it’s important to slow down, ride smoothly, and stay defensive.

Prep and Gear

Before you ride in the rain, give your motorcycle and your kit a once-over. Keep the following in mind:
- Tires & tech: Check tread depth and tire pressure, plus your brakes and lights.
- Rain gear: Wear a waterproof suit, gloves, and membrane-lined boots.
- Helmet and visor: Grab a clear visor with a Pinlock insert to prevent fogging.
- Visibility: Add reflectors to your jacket, helmet, or luggage.

Riding Technique in the Rain

Even the best gear can’t replace an adapted riding style. In wet conditions, tweak your technique a bit:

  • Apply throttle, brakes, and steering smoothly
  • Take corners with less lean angle
  • Brake gently with the front and stabilize with the rear
  • Increase your following distance, keep your eyes far ahead

Hazards and Hydroplaning

Slippery spots and deep puddles can be especially tricky. Here’s what to watch for:
- Markings, tar snakes, leaves: Ride over them as upright as possible
- Hydroplaning: When there's a lot of water, slow down, keep the bike straight, and avoid sudden movements

Take a Break

Sometimes it’s better to pause your ride for a bit. If you're caught in heavy rain or a thunderstorm, it’s safer to wait it out. But keep in mind: Stopping under a bridge on the shoulder isn’t allowed. Always adjust your speed and following distance to match the conditions.

Motorcycle Care After Riding in the Rain

After a wet ride, it’s worth giving your bike a little love. Rain kicks up dirt, salt, and oil residue that settles on paint, rims, and the chain. Rinse your motorcycle with clean water, dry it thoroughly, and then hit the chain with fresh chain lube. That way you prevent rust, keep everything running smoothly, and extend the life of the drivetrain and components. Your brakes will also appreciate a quick check, since grime can build up in the pads.

Rain Ride Checklist

A quick reminder before you hit the road:
✅ Tires and lights checked
✅ Rain suit, waterproof gloves and boots ready
✅ Pinlock visor installed
✅ Lower your speed, increase your distance
✅ Clean your bike and lube the chain after the ride
