The Kingdom of Morocco offers countless highlights for your next motorcycle tour. This northwest African country is not only home to beautiful nature, but also many sights. The beautiful city of Marrakesh is located here and is full of color, culture and nature. Morocco borders both the coast and the mountains which makes the country a perfect destination for motorcyclists.
Our dear user Matthieu from MuletCycle hit the road for you and explored the country with calimoto by motorcycle.
Hello to all calimoto users! For the second year in a row, I'm here to tell you about my annual road trip. This time we changed continents and traveled to Morocco, where we drove over 5000 kilometers (3,107 miles) between off-road and on-road. The whole trip covered 8500 kilometers (5,281 miles) and took a total of 21 days.
From Clermont-Ferrand in France, my two fellow travelers and I headed for southern Spain. More precisely to Tarifa, where we boarded the ferry to Tangier. Thanks to calimoto's excellent tips, we covered more than 1900 kilometers (1,180 miles) in two days. The app showed us the shortest route which allowed us to easily reach our destination.
Upon arrival, the change of scenery was tremendous. Everything from the food, which is simply exquisite, to the culture that is very welcoming to travelers. Even the chaos on the streets of the big cities where the traffic rules are a little different from ours was remarkable. All in all, this trip had everything we needed to have an extraordinary time!
We were lucky to spend most of our time on the motorcycle far away from touristic places. We rode through both the High and Middle Atlas, as well as the famous dunes of Merzouga and the mythical beach 'Plage Blanche'. Each of these regions offered us exceptional landscapes and routes that we will never forget! We also walked through the city of Marrakesh to eat delicious tajine among other well known places such as the Dades Gorge with its famous curves.
I used calimoto to record each day of my trip and create a memory of this fabulous journey. Thanks to the app, which I've been using for three years now, I can always revisit the most beautiful routes that I saved to enjoy them over and over again. However, calimoto is also great to explore new, unknown areas.
As for the accommodations, we spent 18 of the 21 days in our bivouac. In the mountains, we experienced hail, rain and cold, and in the vast plains of the desert the temperatures didn't drop below 30 degrees (86ºF) at night. However, when the sky cleared up at night, we were rewarded with an unforgettable view of the Milky Way – an absolutely unforgettable experience!
As for the weather, we got a little unlucky. Bad weather accompanied us throughout the entire trip. After hail, rain and a constantly cloudy sky, we encountered a powerful thunderstorm in the middle of the desert. The wadis (rivers) flooded within a couple of minutes and we had to turn back several times. This situation was definitely the most challenging of our adventure!
Finally, I would like to say that if you're planning a trip to Morocco make sure you have good equipment as many places are located in the mountains at an altitude of more than 2000 meters (6,561 ft). The contrast between the regions is extreme and temperatures can fluctuate between more than 30 degrees (86°F) within a few hours. Also, always remember to prepare some meals in advance and to bring as much water as possible, as unforeseen events could pop up around every curve. Nevertheless, Morocco is truly a wonderful destination to explore by motorcycle! An experience that will give you an unbeatable feeling on your bike. With its landscapes, trails and passes, this country will leave you with unforgettable memories forever.
Despite a number of challenges, the trip to Morocco was a success through and through. A trip full of memories, dreams and experiences.
