Welcome to our tour of the month. The motto for August is TWISTIES - MOUNTAINS - LAKES. There is no better place to find this combination than the breathtaking South Tyrol. Björn Thiele from WorldofBikers.de has put together a beautiful tour for us. So let's not waste any time!
We ride from Truden im Naturpark over to St. Josef am See, curve after curve, until we reach the majestic Lake Santa Giustina. The lake illustrates the power of water which has shaped the picturesque canyons of the creek Noce over thousands of years. The Santa Giustina dam in Val di Non retains the Noce to form the Lake Santa Giustina. The arch dam was built from 1946 to 1950 and inaugurated in 1951. At the time it was the highest dam in Europe with a total height of 152.50 m and it is still one of the highest dams on earth.
At the foot of the Cima Tosa we pass by Lake Molveno, then ascend Monte Bondone, to descend it via countless curves along Lake Caldonazzo. The latter is a lake in the Valsugana valley east of Trento. With its maximum deepness at 49 m, Lake Caldazzo is located at an altitude of 500 m and is the largest lake in the province after Lake Garda.
We continue at the foot of the Trudner Nature Park to Lake Stramentizzo, a reservoir which was built in 1956 on the site of the old village. A new settlement of Stramentizzo was founded at the east end of the lake. The only element preserved from the old village is the portal of the church Santi Angeli Custodi.
The Hotel Schönwies was chosen as accomodation providing a calm and relaxing place with a warm welcome and charming hospitality. The hotel is known for its regional and sustainable values and marks the ideal starting point for numerous motorcycle tours in the Dolomites. The motto of the family-run business is "the conscious experience of special moments" which goes hand in hand with calimoto: Every ride is an adventure!
