As you already know, we have tested various products from SP Connect, like the smartphone mount Moto Mount Pro with a matching phone case. But what is the alternative for those who don't use one of the high-priced smartphone bestsellers?
Until now, the alternative consisted of the Universal Interface - a small plastic plate with an integrated twist-lock mechanism, which you stuck onto the back of your smartphone using 3M adhesive film…
But SP Connect keeps improving, and developed the new Universal Phone Case, which we would like to present to you in the following test.
As soon as you open the package, the quality stands out. The Universal Phone Case is already relatively stable by itself, so it can stand on its own. The coated fabric and the grey color are visually fairly neutral. On the front, there is a large window for the touchscreen, which looks a bit rubbery. On the back, there is the patented twist-lock mechanism, which we already know from the other SP Connect cases, and a smaller window for the smartphone camera. On the sides, reflective security printing makes it complete.
Here's what you need to know: The Universal Phone Case is available in two sizes. Size M is suitable for smartphones with dimensions up to 152 x 73 x 10 mm, size L up to 172 x 85 x 10 mm. We tested the case in size M with the Samsung Galaxy A5 and the Xperia XZ3. The scope of delivery also includes a fleece insert against scratches, and a stick-on EVA frame, which can be used to optimize the fit a bit more. In our case, we did not need the frame since the smartphones fit very properly into the case with the fleece insert on their own. The case also protects against rain, mud, dust, and sweat.
After sliding the smartphone and the fleece insert into the case, you simply roll up the upper part and close it with a Velcro fastener. The smartphone now remains tight in the case and does not slip.
SP Connect promises consistent touchscreen usability - and we can confirm that! The display still reacts very well, and the lateral buttons on the device respond without problems despite being in a case.
Overall, we have to say that the new Universal Phone Case is a HUGE improvement over the previous alternative (Universal Interface) from SP Connect!
Only two small things we would like to point out - for the sake of completeness:
The case does not offer the possibility to charge the smartphone while riding, as they focused on providing complete protection. However, if you are a bit skilled, you can cut away the case at the corresponding spot and then charge the smartphone as usual.
The second issue is that the volume and standby buttons on the side are no longer visible from the smartphone. But let's be honest: We usually know exactly where they are. ;)
However, these aspects do not influence our opinion too much. The case is an excellent addition to the SP Connect product repertoire.
Even while riding, the Universal Phone Case is in no way inferior to the model-specific cases. The attachment to the Moto Mount Pro works just as smoothly as the stable view of the display.
We are more than satisfied, and the case is absolutely worth the price of almost 30 €! The Universal Phone Case is also available as a starter set together with the Moto Mount Pro as a Moto Bundle.
Speaking of the Moto Mount Pro… SP Connect has now released the mount in a very chic Chrome style.
It turns the mount into a real eye-catcher and fits perfectly for classic bikes. The quality is the same, no matter the color or style. You can find the test of the Moto Mount Pro* here.
